10 reasons why you should eat oatmeal for breakfast

You’ll find this post to be very interesting because I asked our Editorial Assistant Colleen to write this one and from her introduction, it’s very clear that we both differ greatly when it comes to oatmeal.
I cannot live without oatmeal and I know that my friend Krista might be the other person on this planet who loves oatmeal as much as I do.
I eat oatmeal at least two or three times per week because if I’m not eating it like porridge, I’m adding it to my breakfast smoothies (I grind it finely before adding the other ingredients).
I find that oatmeal is incredibly soothing and I really like being able to change the flavor of my oatmeal bowl depending on the ingredients I add. I like to play with dry fruits, dry nuts, shredded unsweetened coconut. Maple syrup, unpasteurized honey raw sugar or poached fruits … it really all depends on my mood.
Sometimes when I’m really not in the mood to cook dinner, I’ll opt for a bowl of oatmeal instead and I find that it ties me up nicely until breakfast.
Now, that I’ve said all that I had to say about oatmeal, I’m sure you’ll be interested in reading about Colleen’s take on one my favourite breakfast foods.

I have a tough time eating oatmeal, other than an oatmeal raisin cookie, but I have plenty of friends who have it every morning and I’m beginning to understand why.
It’s more than a quick fix to have for breakfast but it also contains lots of essential nutrients for daily diet.
Here are 10 reasons why you should eat oatmeal for breakfast:
1) Oatmeal is a good source of insoluble fibre which is beneficial in attacking certain bile acids, which makes it a contender in fighting cancer.
2) A regular intake of oatmeal can help at preventing heart disease.
3) The soluble fibre in the oatmeal is great for those with diabetes because it helps to slow down the digestion of starch.
4) Oatmeal could help reduce the risk of getting type 2 diabetes (which is a major concern for a lot of people suffering from obesity).
5) Oatmeal has a wealth of nutrients such as vitamin E, magnesium, iron, zinc and protein.
6) It’s quite low in calories, a cup is only 130!
7) Oatmeal is great for keeping bad cholesterol at bay while enhancing your good cholesterol.
#8) Oatmeal also helps at reducing the risk of elevated blood pressure.
9) More oatmeal can also reduce the chances of weight gain and obesity.
10) Preparation is quite and simple.
Probably the most common and tastiest way of incorporating oatmeal into your diet is to mix it up with some plain yogurt and fresh fruit. Oatmeal fruit bars are another alternative that you could prebake and grab on your way out the door.
