6 easy smoked salmon recipes
June 30, 2009

Anyone who’s ever been to Vancouver knows how important smoked salmon is. They sell the best sockeye smoked salmon (aka red salmon) I’ve ever tasted and you can find it pretty much anywhere in the city.
Sockeye is the third most popular salmon among Pacific salmon after pink salmon and Chum salmon.
I know that smoked salmon is a bit expensive compared to other foods and I also know that more and more readers are concerned about their food budget, but given how tasty and healthy smoked salmon is, I decided to feature it.
The great thing about smoked salmon is that it’s full of nutrients because it’s rich in omega 3, it’s an excellent choice of lean protein and it’s rich in health fat (essential fatty acids)!
The Journal of the American Medical Association, established WAY back in 1995 that a healthy diet should include at least one serving of a fatty-fish per week to reduce the risk of serious heart issues like a heart attack and certain cancers.
My favourite TV doctors Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Dr. Mehmet Oz are both quite adamant about adding more fatty acids in your diet and smoked salmon fits the bill nicely.
The best part of smoked salmon for those who are allergic to the stove is that you don’t have to cook it to eat it!
>>>> I’ll share with you my 6 favourite ways of eating smoked salmon:
1) Smoked salmon, bagel and cream cheese: This is a classic that came to us in North America via Montreal and New York City and the immigration of many Russian and European Jews. A smoked salmon Sunday brunch is such a pleasant and tasty experience. All you need are a few freshly baked bagels (preferably from a Jewish baker), cream cheese (I quite like goat cheese myself from Quebec or imported from France), capers, red onions (I cook mine because I cannot digest raw onions) and fresh dill! This is as easy as can be!
2) Smoked salmon pasta: This is so delicious! You only need to chose your favourite pasta shape and cook it. Once you’ve cooked it, you just need to reduce some cream in your pan, add salt, pepper and fresh dill and cook that for a few minutes. Once you’re done, simply add the cooked pasta and some strip of smoked salmon and you are ready to serve!
3) Smoked salmon dip: This is so simple that a five-year old could make this. Here again, there is no cooking required. You simply need to mix smoked salmon chunks with cream cheese and a little dill in a food processor and you are ready to serve. You can serve your smoked salmon dip on top of French bread, rye bread, crackers or on top of warm pita bread!
4) Smoked salmon wrap: Here again, you’ll be able to prepare this dish with little effort. You’ll want to buy your favourite wrap, spread some cream cheese, chop up your favourite veggies, add a bit of greens (like mesclun mix) and add strips of smoked salmon and you’re done!
5) Smoked salmon pizza: I would not recommend a tomato sauce for the base of a smoked salmon pizza. I think you should spread some goat cheese on your pizza shell, add the smoked salmon, top that off with onion rings and a few leaves of dill and bake your pizza for 15 minutes and you’re ready to eat a delicious pizza!
6) Smoked salmon sandwich: This is the same concept as the bagels I talked about earlier, but instead of choosing a bagel (which you should really only eat a few times a year because bagels aren’t the best choice in terms of carbs) you can choose a whole wheat bread or a rye bread. A smoked salmon sandwich is perfect for lunch!

I think smoked salmon looks tasty. But, is it still raw? Is it ok to eat half cooked fish or meat?

Cessa,
Smoke salmon is not raw perse … it’s smoke.
Smoked fish is quite popular and when it comes to meats … Italians have mastered the art of cured/salted meats.
If you are pregnant, I would recomment checking with your doctor to make sure he/she approved.
If sushi is save to eat … smoked salmon is not an issue!
