Biggest Loser returns on September 15th
I’ve never watched a full episode (or a full season for that matter) of the Biggest Loser in the past. I’ve watched parts of the show and I’ve caught wind of some of the past participants on the news.
Launching Eat Smart Age Smart has changed things.
Last year, I had tracked the weekly progress of Paul McKenna’s American special show “I can make you thin” on my beauty site and the response was insane. I was getting thousands of people coming to the site to read what they had missed from the show.
I’ve decided that I’ll be tracking the progress of the 16 new contestants that will compete on the Biggest Loser season 8 so that I can explain some of the lessons from the show that can help my readers make better food and lifestyle choices to help them lose the weight and keep it off for life.
I was watching parts of season 4 of the Biggest Loser this week on TV and I was shocked beyond belief when one contestants said:
I know that 90% of participants on the Biggest Losers gain back the weight after the show ends, but I’m determined to be part of the 10% that doesn’t!
WOW – that is one of the worst statistic I’ve ever heard when it comes to evaluating the effectiveness of a concept.
The Biggest Loser is a great concept because it shows people who are overweight that it is possible to change your life even if you have 150 lbs to lose. The problem is that all these contestants are being followed by a couple of trainers (constantly yelling at you and pushing you into these extreme workouts), personal chefs and a series of other coaches. They often train 6-8 hours a day and often are on a set number of calories per day.
This works well when the cameras are rolling, but what happens when the lights are off the participants are at home faced with their old demons and faced with their old ways of eating.
90% rate of failure is incredibly high. This means there might be something missing between the time the show ends and the time these Biggest Loser participants have to take accountability for their own lives, their own eating/lifestyle habits and their own weight.
This really got me thinking and since I try to make this site as informative as possible and make it a support system for people looking for simple yet effective ways of keeping the weight off, I decided to spend the next few weeks analyzing the Biggest Loser and offering additional tips to help a lot of needy people out there.
The cost of obesity in America is staggering and all this debate over Health Care is really driving this home.
