Wild blueberry holiday dessert recipes

wild-blueberries-holidays-2009-dessets

There are still so many days of baking left and that means so many more days to incorporate the antioxidant goodness of wild blueberries.

I think that clafouti might be my favourite blueberry dessert (a blueberry clafouti that is). That said, I’ve tasted some pretty delicious blueberry tarts that were to die for.

As North Americans we underestimate the availability of blueberries year round. Right now if you were to check my freezer, you’d see that I have 4 bags of frozen blueberries because I always stock up when they are on sale!

I hope these three desserts made with wild blueberries will get you into the kitchen whipping up some tasty desserts during the holidays!

Before I pass on these fantastic desserts to you, I just wanted to touch on desserts. If you are trying to lose weight and get healthier, the last thing you want to do is give up your favourite desserts. I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is to make radical lifestyle changes and then realize it’s far too difficult to keep up for a lifetime.

Having dessert once a week is a pleasurable experience and it’s really a treat. It’s when you start eating dessert twice daily or every day that it becomes cause for concern because desserts are made with sugar, white flour and other ingredients that are more about pleasure than health.

Tips to hosting a chocolate tasting for dessert

chocolate-tasting-top

I’m not big on chocolate. I do like my occasional piece of dark chocolate, but I could easily live an entire year without eating chocolate and not miss it (in fact I have many times). Now, I’ve been eating a bit more chocolate these days because there are so many different dark chocolates available and you can now buy so many flavoured dark chocolates from European chocolate makers.

That said, I have to say that the idea of a chocolate tasting for dessert perks me right up.

It’s true that I’m a big believer in keeping dessert to what it is because I’m not always crazy about those low-fat desserts and I’ve yet to find many “healthy desserts” I crave. Dessert is dessert and it’s a treat that you should enjoy in moderation. Also, if you adhere to the idea of low-fat dessert than you have to keep in mind that in order to reduce the fat and keep the consistency another ingredient has to be added and it’s not always a better alternative to fat.

That said, the advantage of a chocolate tasting is that all the dark chocolate is actually good for your health!

Green & Black’s Organic hot chocolate recipes

hot-chocolate-recipe

I came back the other night from a 90-minute brisk walk because I wanted to be outside and not stuck inside a gym. It does happen occasionally where the idea of going to the gym doesn’t work at all for me and I usually end up going of extremely long walks.

It was a cold night and there were few people outside and the walk really cleared my mind.

Since I had a late lunch, I didn’t feel starved, but I knew I needed to eat some food (including one source of protein) or else I’d wake up at 2 a.m. starved.

It suddenly hit me that I wanted a hot cup of cocoa. I stopped by the nearest drug store on my way back home and bought 86% dark Belgian chocolate. I’ll eat the 70% dark chocolate, but I find the 86% dark chocolate makes a stronger cup of cocoa.

Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate Fondue Recipes

Now it’s true that when you add milk to dark chocolate, you kind of negate the antioxidant effects. Since most fondue recipes are made with heavy cream, I don’t know if I’d say that a chocolate fondue recipe is “healthy” per se, but I will say that you are allowed 10% pleasure foods in one week and a chocolate fondue is all about pleasure.

Now you also have to keep in mind that there are very few ingredients in a chocolate fondue and the fun is to actually play around with the fruit and other dipping foods. Therefore you have a really great quality dessert that is delicious, quick and a great bounding experience.

Now since you are able to add quite a lot of fruits to the chocolate fondue, I think that a little indulgence once in a while is permitted.

Chocolate Fondue Fountains are so popular and so decadent. I mean you just want to stick your head and drink as much of that chocolate goodness as possible. I’m not usually drawn to chocolate, but when I see a chocolate fountain at an event or wedding, I go as crazy as everyone else.

French blueberry pie recipe for the summer

I’ve loved blueberries my entire life. I’ve loved blueberry well before I even ever knew they were linked to antioxidants, superfoods, health and longevity of life.

I simply have loved blueberries from the time I was a small child because they taste amazingly delicious and when I was growing up you had to wait all year long for blueberry season (July-August) to be able to enjoy them (now of course you can buy flavour-less blueberries off season).

I usually eat my blueberries with plain organic yogurt and I’ll also add a handful of blueberries in my morning shake (aka my breakfast smoothie).

I also quite enjoy blueberries in my salads and blueberry muffins are the end of me (of course, we’re talking about healthy blueberry muffins bought at the natural health baker because regular muffins are filled with so many ingredients I just don’t want to put into my body).

Great strawberry recipes for the summer!

strawberry_recipes_for_summer

I love strawberries at this time of the year and you won’t catch me eating them at any other time in the year.

I don’t even like strawberry jam and I’m not a fan of frozen strawberries because I usually find them tasteless, but fresh strawberries that are seasonal are superb.
