Krizia’s Food Banter
« Previous ArticlesFoods experts NEVER eat

I was surfing the pages of Yahoo’s Shine online magazine when I landed on an article from last November that generated over 1,000 comments.
Without even reading the comments, I knew what some of those people were going to say.
Liz Vaccariello, Editor-in-Chief of Prevention magazine and co-author of the Flat Belly Diet and Flat Belly Diet Cookbook wrote an article listing certain foods food experts (most likely nutritionists) won’t eat.
I quickly looked at the list of seven foods and I could see that there are some foods that I myself didn’t eat that were on the list, but some foods I eat all the time were.

Calorie and nutrition content should be obvious when you eat out

Feature presented by Colleen our Editorial Assistant
When you go to a supermarket to pick out your week’s worth of groceries, oftentimes you look at the nutrition list on the products you purchase. So is it that much of a stretch to expect the same privilege when you’re going out to eat?
It’s odd that some kind of program like this hasn’t officially been introduced yet.
There’s talk of a possible law in the U.S. that would require chain restaurants and fast-food places to reveal that information to the public.
You would probably think twice about getting a burger at one of the drive-through counters if you really knew how many calories you were eating or how low the nutritional value some of these quick meals were. On the other hand, this system could also be a benefit. Some fast-food joints might promote their healthier choices instead of their fattier options.

Should there be a ban on fast food commercials aimed at kids?

Feature by our Editorial Assistant Colleen
Did you ever think that the junk food commercials that children consume these days might contribute to obesity among kids?
The National Bureau of Economic Research seems to think so. They did a study ( The National Bureau of Economic Research study) and found that if a ban was put on fast-food restaurant ads then the number of overweight kids aged 3 to 11 could be reduced by 18 per cent! The number of teenagers aged 12 to 18 who are overweight could also drop to 14 per cent without the ads.
> So is it time to reduce the amount of time your kid sits in front of the TV watching these heavily marketed commercials aimed at getting them to eat these unhealthy foods?
> Do you think a ban is needed?

Local eateries are a great way to deal with post-Christmas spending

It’s true that 90% of the North American population must be on some sort of diet or weight loss program by now and I’m sure that the sales of salad and vegetables are at an all-year high.
It’s also true that many people are starting to feel the pain of holiday shopping. After the holidays so many of us receive our December statements and hesitantly open the envelope to see these huge numbers looking at us. I’m sure you must have the same reaction I do and you must always wonder how it is possible that you could have spent so much money in only a few weeks. Once the shock of holiday shopping has calmed down and you realize it will take more than a few weeks to lose all that weight you’ve put on over the holidays, you’ll most likely realize that as some point in the near future you’d still like to go out for dinner once in a while.
It’s true that a lot of people are going to pack a lunch in the hopes of cutting back on their food spending and some might consider fast food restaurants (and I’m referring to both sit-down fast food restaurants and those take-away/take-out ones) as a great way to “eat out” without spending too much money. Since I don’t eat at fast food restaurants, I’ll usually save my dining-out budget for restaurants that leave a memorable impression.
Now, a local eatery such as a local bistro will NEVER be as cheap as a fast food restaurant but you won’t spend nearly as much as higher end restaurant and you’ll end up with a delicious meal at a great price.
Local eateries use fresh ingredients in the preparation of their meal something you won’t see in fast food joints and local eateries actually employ chefs that have a sense of consciousness when it comes to the food they prepare and serve.
I was really not in the mood to cook the other night so I decided to head to a local eatery called Le Gourmand to taste their new food concept.

Which healthy habits are you committing to for the New Year?

Here we are again at the beginning of a brand new year filled with hope and aspirations.
For most people, fitness (aka eating healthy, exercising, losing weight, getting the entire family on a healthy regime, stop being a couch potato and much more) tops the list of things they want to improve for the year.
That said, I think it is brutally important that you be as specific as possible when it comes to determining what outcome you want. Basically, you need to have a clear vision as to what you want to accomplish and how you’ll make it happen.
I’d love to open the floor and hear what readers have to say about which healthy habits they’re committing to for the New Year.
I’ll go ahead and start the discussion and I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
Practices Krizia is committed to maintaining in 2010:
* I floss every single day (even on vacation)
* I remove my make-up each night … even if it’s 3 a.m.!
* I love to exercise and I love when I sweat so much I can barely see in front of me.

Foods to help with a hangover!?!?

This is surely the time of year where so many people drink a few more drinks than usual.
I don’t know about you, but I find there is nothing worse than a hangover. I mean you are in so much pain and discomfort you have to wonder WHY did you have to drink to this point?
There are many cures to a hangover that have been passed on from generation to generation and some work, but some are really more old wives’ tales than anything else.
If you’ve spent a bit too much time partying and drinking it up, there are some foods that can bring comfort and help deal with your headaches, nausea, stomachache, fatigue and overall sense of feeling really “yuck”.
>>> Here are some foods you’ll want to reach for when you have a bad hangover:
1. Drink water: An old dotcom colleague of mine told me that if I drank too much, I needed to drink as much water as I possibly could before going to bed and when I get up in the morning to continue drinking as much water as I can.

What’s in my fridge?

You always hear people say that learning by example is the only way.
So in an attempt to show my readers I practice what I preach, I’m literally opening up my fridge and if I get a lot of readership/questions/comments, I just might have a monthly feature and show readers what I eat.
You’ll see the groceries that pack my fridge are super simple and uncomplicated.
I didn’t open my freezer, simply because it’s impossible to see what’s in there. I buy multiple steaks, chicken and frozen wild blueberries in bulk when they go on sale, but I’ll quickly go through the main things that you’d find and would never find in my freezer.
