I believe diets are so popular because most people find it extremely difficult to stick to a healthy eating plan and therefore they are always jumping from one fade diet to another.

It’s true that I might be more disciplined than a lot of people when it comes to healthy eating, but I’m not perfect and I do have many days when I just want to eat what I feel like eating even if I know it’s not the best food option for me.

I’ll give a good example, yesterday, I had a craving for gelato (Italian ice cream) and chips in the same day within a few hours of each other. Since I do watch what I eat on a regular base, I decided to give in and indulge in both. I most likely will not eat dessert or chips for many days to come, but yesterday I was in the mood for both!

As you can clearly see, I’m not perfect all the time (no one really is), I do give in to temptations here and there. Healthy eating is still a learning curve for me every single day. I do learn quite a lot from reading a number of books, magazines, blogs and sites and I do also learn a lot from you, my favorite readers in the world and many of the fans on my Facebook fan page.

If you want to adopt a healthy eating plan and get off the diet bandwagon, I’ll share these simple tips with you to help you along the way:

1. Know your “why”: If you truly want to keep motivated about reaching your health goals, you’ll want to make sure that you have a clear understanding of your “why”. For you, it can be to live a long and healthy life and see your kids get married or run a marathon. Just find a reason why to keep pushing you to the next level. Your “why” will be your guiding force whenever you face temptation.

2. Take it slow: Slow and steady wins the race! This quote cannot be more appropriate for any healthy eating plan and healthy lifestyle goals. You won’t be able to get it all done in one day, one week or one month, so it’s best for you to take it slow and make sure you keep at it for the long term. It’s best to make a few small changes each week to give yourself time to adapt these changes into your lifestyle.

3. Don’t overdo it: Hollywood-type-diets like the cookie diet, apple diet, baby food diet, grapefruit diet and the banana diet are very dramatic and offer quick results, but these results are quite short lived because it’s impossible to live a lifetime eating nothing but one type of food.

4. Eat foods you like and get to know new ones: You cannot change your eating habits overnight. If you don’t eat spinach on a regular base, it will be difficult to start eating spinach three times per week. The idea is to integrate healthy foods gradually to your diet and give yourself time to get accustomed to them.

5. Have healthy foods on hand: If you pack healthy foods and healthy snacks it will be easier to stay away from a lot of the unhealthy choices available. You can easily pack almonds, raisins, fruits, cheese cubes and a few vegetables to ensure you are always eating healthy foods. Packing your own lunch is an ideal scenario!

6. Eat before eating: If you’re going out to an event, it’s always best not to go on a completely empty stomach. You want to avoid being starved and jumping on all the high-calorie appetizers.

7. Don’t get hungry. This will surely set you off course! If you get too hungry, you will stop thinking and jump for the first thing on hand and that’s usually not a salad. Make sure you avoid long periods of time in between meals.

8. Healthy food options when you eat out. If you take time to read the menu carefully, you’ll find many healthy food choices. When you eat out, you don’t always have to choose fried foods or big steaks. All menus offer a long list of healthy choices!

9. Indulge in your favourite cheat foods: You should still eat your favourite cheat foods once in a while. If you have an intense craving for chocolate cakes, you don’t have to eat the whole cake … you can buy a small piece of cake and eat it over a couple of days.

10. Eat small portions when you go out. When you go to a party with a lot of food, you don’t have to pile you plate with as much food as you can possibly fit on that plate.

On the contrary, you really want to eat sensibly until you’re slightly full.

Instead of snacking all night, it’s best to grab a plate and put a reasonable amount of food and finish your plate. By putting your food on a plate, you are able to see exactly how much food you are eating and this will avoid an extended snacking-fest that might lead you to eating more calories than you need.

Start walking with a pedometer to log in how many steps you take … it’s the easiest way to set yourself on the road to losing the extra weight!

A pedometer is the ideal fitness equipment (aka fitness gadget) to get you moving when you’ve had a fairly sedentary lifestyle where physical fitness has been low on the list of priorities.

A pedometer will help you learn a few key things on your road to a better health:

1) The pedometer will teach you how to include fitness into your lifestyle.

2) The pedometer will also teach you how to walk before you run.

A lot of people who’ve never even considered fitness at all will wake up one day and run to the gym for a two-hour workout, wake up the next morning feeling sore and tired and then never go back to the gym.

Using a pedometer to make walking a habit is going to provide you with more long term results than jumping into a short-term-crazy-workout.

>>> Walk 10,000 steps a day!

I’m a huge fan of Dr. Oz and I believe he’s the biggest advocate of walking daily. He’s been talking about the 10,000 steps a day since he was a regular contributor on Queen Oprah’s show and he’s still spreading his gospel on his own show.

There have been studies showing how crucial a pedometer can become in your weight loss journey.

In a study that took place a few years ago, 400 women were given pedometers and this goal. After eight weeks, women reported increased energy, less frequent illness and weight loss.

An earlier study of more than 200 sedentary adults showed that wearing pedometers encouraged people to be more active. Their body fat decreased and their fitness and blood pressure improved, as effectively as if they had structured exercise.

Another recent study involved senior adults with osteoarthritis of the knees that significantly interfered with their daily life. All participated in an arthritis self-management class. Some were also given pedometers and a goal of increasing their daily steps by 30 per cent.

>>> What is walking so important?

Well, if you’ve travelled to Europe you know that a lot of Europeans don’t hit the gym like us North Americans, but they remain slim as they age because they walk a lot.

When I’m in Europe, I can eat dessert every single day and eat fatty cheese every single day and come back without an extra pound.

Regular walking has long been known to reduce high blood pressure. Several studies have reported drops of six to ten points in blood pressure among those who use pedometers and walk more. The blood pressure drops seem to be a direct result of walking and unrelated to weight.

>>> The pedometer will help you keep on track and help you reach your goals!

Buying a pedometer might be the best thing you do this year!

One study divided women into two groups. Everyone wore a pedometer daily, but only one group kept a daily record of their steps. After 12 weeks, the record-keeping group was logging about 2,000 steps more than the other group. That’s equivalent to an extra mile a day.

When you can gauge how many steps you’ve taken in a day, you automatically increase your awareness level and that’s major when it comes to accountability towards yourself – another study found that those with best results from an eight-week program aiming for 10,000 steps daily were those who set daily goals and kept a log.

The pedometer will also allow you to gradually increase your steps if you find it hard to reach the 10,000 steps a day mark from the get go.

>>> Which pedometer should you buy?

There are many brands of pedometers on the market at different price points.

It’s true you can go out and buy a cheap model and start logging in your 10,000 steps a day, but you can also bypass all that and go straight to the mac-daddy-Cadillac of pedometers!

Not long ago, I was waiting to get some printing work done at a printing store and started chatting with the woman in front of me and we started talking about keeping fit as you age.

The topic of the pedometer came up quickly and I told her from my research and from other people I know and from my own experience, the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer was the best on the market. It’s funny, because she had bought a generic brand and it broke within a few weeks of use.

She asked me where she could buy the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer and I told her in Canada it was sold at Shoppers Drug Mart (Omron sells a different brand in Canada versus the U.S.), but Americans had a much easier time at finding one. That said, I do have a food coaching client who simply ordered hers on Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer because she could find one where she lived in Florida.

The Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer is a highly sensitive device that has a sleek, metallic plastic shield-shaped device that runs on a tiny watch battery. It not only counts how many steps you’ve taken, but tells you how many miles you’ve walked and how many calories you burn along the way. It even works while you’re jogging (which you’ll graduate to in time).

Here’s a quick tip you might want to keep in mind when using the Omron Walking style pedometer:

Carrying the pedometer in the pocket of a baggy pair of walking shorts may result in readings that are not as accurate as they should be when the pedometer is locking into the pocket of a snug pair of jeans or walking pants. If you can buy a handy belt clip, it might be best for more accurate results and readings.

As much as I’d be willing to give up an organ before having to give up working out, I wasn’t always all that keen on exercising.

In fact, the first few times I started exercising, I hated it. I detested the whole idea of having to sweat so much and then spend the next two days in pain.

I truly didn’t start enjoying fitness and exercise until 2000. That’s when I got laid off from a corporate job and found myself with about 25 lbs extra from all that office food that is everywhere (you know what I’m talking about: huge muffins for morning meetings, catered lunches, candy/chocolate at every desk, Beth’s homemade peanut butter cookies that she brings in every Friday and all those cakes for birthdays).

Since I was off for the first time over the summer, I decided to hit the gym to avoid boredom. It took me about two months of training five days a week to start noticing that my clothes were fitting differently. It’s only when two other gym-goers who had not seen me in months rejoiced at my slimmer body that I realized this workout thing makes sense.

Because I had become a regular at the gym, I was no longer in so much pain because my body was able to recover quickly from strenuous exercise. My clothes were getting loose and I really started feeling very differently about my body.

An acquaintance of mine expressed her amazement at the fact that I had the discipline to stick to working out on a regular basis and she asked me what motivated me to never falter (she hated exercise and she just couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that I had been so regular for such a long time). That was such a good question that I decided to write a post about it because I truly had never thought of the “why” until she asked the question.

Subconsciously, I knew what kept me challenging my body like that, but consciously, I had never expressed it.

>>> So here are my 10 reasons why I keep exercise at the top of my list:

1. I truly enjoy how I feel after a workout … it’s such a sense of accomplishment.

2. I love how fitness boxing and weight training make me feel strong.

3. I love how spinning has sculpted my legs.

4. I love that my abs are flat and firm.

5. I never fear having to put on a swimsuit.

6. I have a lot of energy all day long.

7. I am showing respect for myself because I’m talking care of my body.

8. I feel that I’m doing everything I can to lower my risk of serious diseases associated with obesity and aging.

9. It makes me feel sexy because I’m always pleased with the image I see in the mirror.

10. It’s the best de-stressor I know of.

I’ll have to add one last reason: I want to ensure that I have a strong body even in my 90s and that I never end up feeling or looking frail.

I’d love to hear from you if you are engaging in a regular fitness activity.

Can you tell me why you keep training? What keeps you going? You can leave your message in the comment box below!

Oh yes, I’m talking about the hula hoop … the same kind of hula hoop you used to do for hours on end when you were a kid. And yes, the hula hoop is making a serious comeback as a fitness alternative for many people.

I could hula forever when I was a kid, but when I tried it again last year as fitness alternative I found it quite more challenging as an adult than I remembered it to be when I was a kid.

A brilliant American company created the Hoopnotica Fitness Travel Hoop Combo hoop and they’ve literally created a new craze for something that was once associated with a childhood activity.

You see, most of the hula hoops you’ll buy in stores like Wal-Mart are made for kids and the ring size is small. Hoopnotica has designed adult size hoops and people all over America have been hooping.

I mean, even First Lady Michelle Obama has been photographed hula hooping last summer! Hula hooping can release the inner child in you while firming your entire body.

Hula hoop is so popular that with a little bit of research you’ll find hula hoop classes in major cities such as New York and L.A.

>>> Hula Hoop is quite deceivingly effective:

You might think it’s child’s play, but I can assure you that keeping that hoop in the air while swirling your hips is far more complicated as an adult than you think.

To do so, you are engaging muscles in your core, legs, arms, back and all sorts of others small muscles you never think about.

Since hula hoop is all about co-ordination, you’re not only getting a great body workout, but you are also getting an incredible brain workout because you need a lot of concentration to keep that hoop in the air for a long period of time. According to Saharah Ali, a hula hoop instructor at the Crunch Gym in New York City, you need the same brain power when you hula hoop as you would when doing a crossword puzzle.

Don’t even think for a second that hula hoop is just about your hips. The new classes and the Hoopnotica videos show you how to use your legs, arms and neck to swirl the hoop and in time you can get really sophisticated.

So how many calories can you actually burn with a hula hoop? Well, surprisingly enough, you can burn between 300-500 calories in a one hour session! If you are looking for a non-aggressive workout (aka not like fitness boxing), then hula hoop might be the exercise that gets you off the couch and into exercising again.

Here’s another thing to keep in mind, if you are a busy mom and you have kids, you can buy kiddie hula hoops for the little ones and get an adult hoop for yourself and go outside (during warmer months) and have fun as a family!

Have you ever wondered why you are not losing any weight even though you’re putting in all this effort?

Whenever I need to lose weight because I have been a little bit more indulgent in my diet and not gone to the gym as often as I should, I always follow the same technique:

* I do a cleanse either with detox pill supplements, or, if my short-term lifestyle can handle it, a juice cleanse for about 10 days.

* I cut back on some of the cheat foods I’ve been over-indulging in.

* I take assessment of my portions.

* I make sure I’m at the gym four times per week (when I gain weight, it’s usually because I’m eating more than I should and have reduced my fitness activities to twice per week).

* I also make a point of walking as much as I can instead of taking public transportation.

My formula for trimming down is pretty simple and it’s worked for me for years now. I never take any drastic measures and I never, ever follow questionable quick weight-loss techniques that only result in you gaining more weight and getting caught in a never-ending cycle of weight-gain-weight-loss-weight-gain.

Dr. John Berardi explains in greater detail some simple ways to help you lose unwanted pounds and reach a healthy body weight that you can actually keep for life!

>>>> Here are Dr. John Berardi’s tips for losing weight:

All day long, all across the Web, folks are posting questions about why they’re not losing weight, why they’re not gaining weight and why their body composition isn’t changing. They’re frustrated, confused and feeling helpless. But if most of them just made things simple, progress would follow.

What does “make things simple” mean? Isn’t the body, y’know, complicated?

Well, we know that weight loss happens only when the body is in a negative energy balance (in other words, when there are fewer calories coming in than going out). And we know that weight gain happens only when the body is in a positive energy balance (in other words, when there are more calories coming in than going out).

From this knowledge, we can infer two things:

1. If you aren’t losing… you’re not in a negative energy balance.

2. If you aren’t gaining… you’re not in a positive energy balance.

Of course, it does get a bit more complex than this but again, most folks get lost in the details. So let’s keep it simple for now.

>>Weight loss<<

Assuming you’re eating Precision Nutrition (PN) style, training at least 5 hours per week, and still not losing weight, the explanation is simple: You’re not losing because, for whatever reason, you’re not in a negative energy balance. So you must create one. How can you do that? Well, there are three viable ways:

1. Eat less

2. Exercise more

3. Eat less and exercise more

In the end, it’s pretty simple, no? Typically I recommend the following strategy (again, assuming you’re following PN-style eating and training at least 5 hours per week yet have stagnated):

1. Increase exercise volume to 7 hours per week

2. If stagnation occurs again, decrease calories

3. If stagnation occurs again, increase exercise to 9 hours per week

4. If stagnation occurs again, decrease calories

Your upper limit of exercise volume may be 10-12 hours per week, so make sure to cap it there while manipulating calories the rest of the way.

>>Weight gain<<

Assuming you’re eating Precision Nutrition (PN) training at least 5 hours per week, and still aren’t gaining weight, the reason is simple: You’re not gaining because, for whatever reason, you’re not in a positive energy balance. So you must create one. How can you do that? Well, there are three ways:

1. Eat more

2. Exercise less

3. Eat more and exercise less

(Note: when trying to gain weight, it’s important to maintain your exercise volume at about 4 to 5 hours per week as you still need a strong stimulus for muscle growth. Judging by the overall health status of the North American population, “Eat lots and don’t exercise at all” doesn’t appear to work very well for making you buff. So don’t take this argument to its logical conclusion.)

I recommend the following strategy (again, assuming you’re following PN-style eating and training at least 5 hours per week yet have stagnated):

1. Increase calorie intake

2. If stagnation occurs, decrease non-weight training calorie expenditure and make sure your weight training is stimulating growth

3. If stagnation occurs again, increase calories again and continue to manipulate them as you don’t want your exercise volume to fall too much

>>That’s it … Just Keep it Simple!<<

Most of the time, it’s just that simple.

* Eat Precision Nutrition style. And real Precision Nutrition style, not half-assed, “Oh, I sometimes eat vegetables.” Follow the Ten Habits. Be compliant.

* Train at least 5 hours per week using adequate intensity and well-chosen workout routines.

* Follow the steps above as indicated for meeting your goals.

* Lather, rinse, repeat until ripped and/or huge.

99.9 per cent of all of the individuals I’ve worked with in my career who have properly followed the steps above have succeeded. Only those with serious medical issues don’t respond. So make sure that during the course of your own transformation, you remember these simple lessons. Apply them to what you’re learning in the Precision Nutrition System. Having learned them, there’s absolutely no excuse for not getting closer to your goals.

I first discovered TRX Suspension training in spring of this year while surfing on YouTube, and thought to myself that it looked really cool. At first glance, it looked like a different way of working out and a different way of engaging your muscles by using large training straps.

When I saw the TRX Suspension training video, my gym was undergoing renovations and I was working out at another place. Not long after seeing the video, I noticed a couple of the trainers at the gym where I was working out were using the same yellow suspension straps with their clients. Interestingly enough, the two trainers who were using the straps were instructors whose classes I had attended and gotten an incredibly challenging workout.

Paula is a Pilates instruction and personal trainer who frankly has gotten my body to move in ways that were foreign to me. I’ve taken a few of her Pilates classes and have always left in pain because I was working muscles I had not been using. I was working out my body in a way that was quite different from spinning, skipping rope and weight training.

Vladimir (who is a über-fit personal trainer and instructor) changed my whole perception of boxing. Via six weekly classes where I donned real boxing gloves, I was able to get the rock solid abs that had always eluded me … even after well over a decade of dedicated hard core physical training.

Both Paula and Vladimir are trainers at the Extreme Delisle gym.

>>> If you missed my review of Vlad’s classes, you can still read it here: Fitness boxing classes for women rock!

When I finally got my own TRX Suspension training system, it made sense to me to learn from two fierce trainers instead of going it alone. There are a number of places across North America that offer TRX Suspension training but none are in my city, so I decided to learn from masters who had trained countless clients of their own using the same system.

>>> You’ll find more details about the TRX Suspension training straps and the TRX Suspension training system here: TRX Suspension

Paula was the one who wound up working with me. I’ll be honest, I knew going in that both Paula and Vlad would most likely kill me, but I knew that Paula would also include some of those killer Pilates exercises that would leave me crying (they almost did).

The day before my first TRX Suspension training session, I thought I was being reasonable by not doing an intensive workout. I skipped boxing classes, skipped karate classes (oh, yes – I’ve taken up karate training – I’ll tell you all about it later) … I even skipped weight training (that said, I did go to the gym and skipped rope for 30 minutes because I really felt the need to do some kind of exercise). I thought I was being a good girl and that I could handle my first TRX Suspension training with ease.

>>>>>Since this is the longest and most detailed post I’ve ever written since I’ve been professionally publishing online (since June 2007), I’ve decided to put this information in a PDF to make it easy for you to read and keep on hand. In fact, the entire review is equivalent to 29 pages! You’ll see how much this workout has changed everything about my future workouts!

>>>> If you don’t have time to read the entire post, you can get more details on this military style training: TRX Suspension training

>>>> Here are a few TRX Suspension training strap exercises I found on YouTube:

1) TRX Suspension training — Group Exercise Class

2) TRX Suspension training is a form of military training for everyday people:

Note: The exercise where you bring your knees to each side of your rib cage is so much more difficult than it seems!

3) TRX Suspension training helps recover from paralysis:

4) TRX Suspension training exercises examples (I actually did a lot of these during my session with Paula … which explains why I was so sore!)

5) More TRX Suspension training exercises

>>>>More TRX Suspension training videos

These are only a small sample of the many videos I found on YouTube about TRX Suspension training.

I love watching these videos — I’ve learned a lot of new moves! Check out all the other videos here: TRX Suspension training videos

>>> You’ll find more details about the TRX Suspension training straps and the TRX Suspension training system here: TRX Suspension

I want to thank Extreme Gym (Delisle location) and I want to thank Paula for a killer workout. The management at Extreme Delisle were kind enough to allow me to use their incredible facility to get my training.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is one of the best gyms I’ve been to and they have some of the most dedicated personal trainers I’ve yet to come across!

This is a really brilliant fitness concept! If you are familiar with the elastic bands that are used for fitness more and more often now in gyms, you’ll really want to learn more about Smart Gym™.

Many personal trainers have been using these fitness elastic bands as portable devices that mimic the cable machines you find at most gyms, but the Smart Gym takes things to a whole different level.

If you travel a lot on business and you want to stay fit while on the go, take a few minutes to check out my review of the Smart Gym!

>>> What the heck is the Smart Gym?

Before delving into my video review straight away, I recognise that a number of readers might have never heard of the Smart Gym before so I wanted to spend a bit of time going over what I consider “THE must-have exercise product for travellers and people looking for alternatives when working out indoors or at home”.

In one practical and convenient package you get two elastic resistance bands and one detachable bar. You will also get a 45 minute DVD with instructions on how to use the Smart Gym as well as great exercise ideas. The DVD is a workout by Peter Twist which illustrates how to safely integrate balance and movement with whole body strength to develop SMART Muscle™. You also receive a bonus foam door anchor which provides you with the option of using your Smart Gym from multiple anchor points. You’ll need this bonus in order to do a number of exercises, including those that target your back muscles.

The great thing about the Smart Gym is that it will really help you work your core, legs, butt, chest, back, shoulders, and arms to give you the full package effect!

Here’s another great thing about the Smart Gym: when you buy it, you will automatically be enrolled in the Smart Gym Community membership program and will receive regular emails with loads of workout and fitness ideas, tips and strategies.

I use my Smart Gym on a regular base when I just am not in the mood to run to the gym and still want to do some kind of resistance training. Later this year, I have quite a number of conferences and you can bet that my Smart Gym will be neatly packed into my suitcase!

This is a no-excuse solution to you getting into better shape.

You can watch my video review below, and you’ll find more details here if you want to learn more: Smart Gym
