Furthermore, the recommended food can heighten your immunity, fending you from disease and ailments!
There sits Dr. Howard Shapiro’s point: dieters imagine that they’re saving calories by eating the “virtuous” snack on the left, whereas in reality they’re depriving themselves of the mountain of food on the right.
Dr. Shapiro believes that there are no bad foods, no right or wrong reasons to eat, no perfect number of meals in any given day. He doesn’t believe in telling clients at his weight-loss clinic in Manhattan when they can or can’t eat. Some of them are celebrities and corporate executives with such busy lives that mealtimes are often unpredictable. So Dr. Shapiro reassures them that a calorie is a calorie, whether you eat it before or after 9 p.m. He helps them lose weight by showing them different foods, set side by side, and how the seemingly healthier choice might actually be equal to or greater in calories than a bunch of foods that would seem to be off-limits to someone trying to lose weight.
In Picture Perfect Weight Loss, he uses photos of foods to demonstrate these choices. Thus, a “healthy” carob bar is shown to be equal in calories to 10 scoops of Italian ices. A 10-ounce loaf of crusty bread is shown to be equal to a tiny dish of Chex Mix. Two ounces of reduced-fat cheese are shown to be equal in calories and fat grams to two ounces of salami.
The photos pit all types of snacks and many meal choices against each other, and account for sugar, salt, and starch cravings. The text–easy to read even when discussing scientific principles that scientists don’t fully understand yet–covers everything from exercise to nutrition labels to menus from some of the world’s top restaurants, with the healthiest food choices highlighted.
Regular dieters, though, might want to skip all that until they’ve read the appendix explaining why the most popular fad diets–from the Atkins diet to Suzanne Somers’s–are unhealthy, overly restrictive, or just based on misunderstood science. That alone might be worth the price of Picture Perfect Weight Loss. –Lou Schuler

5 Stars Wow!
Great book! I love the photos. It really helps having them to see the difference in the foods we eat or should not eat. It really opened my eyes.
5 Stars Great book

From The South Beach Diet Super Quick Cookbook: Inside-Out Cheeseburgers
These unique cheese-stuffed burgers feature flaxmeal, which is high in cholesterol lowering soluble fiber and heart-healthy alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). If you can only find whole flaxseed at the market, simply grind it into meal in a spice grinder or small coffee grinder. If you’re skipping the bun, just sprinkle a little balsamic on top of the tomato.
Hands-on time: 10 minutes, Total Time: 20 minutes
1 1/4 lbs lean ground turkey
1/2 cup flaxmeal (2 ounces)
1/2 small red bell pepper, finely diced
2 scallions, thinly sliced
6 tbsp reduced-fat soft goat cheese,
preferably one flavored with herbs or garlic
3/4 tsp salt
4 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
4 very thin whole-wheat sandwich rolls (1.5 ounces each) split
or 8 slices multigrain bread (optional)
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
4 thick slices tomato
Bibb lettuce (optional)
In a large bowl, combine the turkey, flaxmeal, bell pepper, scallions, 2 tablespoons of the goat cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt. Using your hands, blend well and form into 4 balls. Poke a hole into the center of each ball and stuff each with 1 tablespoon of the remaining goat cheese. Pinch the turkey mixture to seal in the cheese and gently form into 4 patties. Make them as flat as you can (to speed the cooking), taking care not to squeeze the cheese out.
In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Sprinkle the pan with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Reduce the heat to medium, add the patties, and cook until browned on 1 side, about 3 minutes. Turn the patties over and cook for 2 minutes longer. Add 1/4 cup water to the pan, reduce the heat to a high simmer, and cover. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until the burgers are cooked all the way through.
Meanwhile, lightly toast the sandwich rolls, if using.
To serve, brush 1 side of each of 4 roll halves with the balsamic vinegar. Top with a burger, a tomato slice, lettuce (if using), and the other roll half.
(Makes 4 Servings)

4 Stars Easy to follow!
This book makes following the program very easy to follow. It has very detailed menus and lots of good recipes. I would say that it is a good book, even if you don’t want to lose any weight. It’s a good program to give you some good ideas for healthy eating.
5 Stars South Beach Winner!
Love South Beach! This cookbook makes it easier to continue eating healthy without a lot of prep/hassle time!
4 Stars AMAZING content – kindle version not so great
This cookbook is full of delicious, healthy, quick recipes! I get home two hours before I have to go to bed and being able to put dinner together in less than 30 minutes is HUGE! Some of my favorites are the recipes that call for you to throw some sliced up deli roast beef in with a couple additional ingredients for a yummy beef dish! The content of this cookbook gets a full 5 stars!
HOWEVER, I do NOT recommend the kindle version AT ALL. I was hesitant to buy a cookbook on kindle, but I thought I’d give it a try – I live in a small apartment and didn’t want to clutter it up with more cookbooks and I like to support emerging technologies. The cookbook contains many cross-references, for example, the meal plan gives page numbers (paper page numbers, not kindle locations) for the recipes it includes, but doesn’t have a link to the recipes. So, if you’re going through the meal plan, you have to search by recipe name, go look at that recipe, and then go to your bookmarks to get back to the meal plan. It’s a lot of work – I’ve done more typing on my kindle since I got this cookbook than I have in the entire time I’ve owned a kindle (which is since they first came out). On the other hand, I can decide what I’m having for dinner on the bus ride home, but all in all, I think the paper version is far superior.
5 Stars Another Winner from the South Beach Cooks!
I remember buying the first South Beach cookbook, “The South Beach Diet Cookbook”. I thought I’d buy it because I was having a lot of success on the South Beach diet, but frankly I didn’t expect much. Most cookbooks seem to only have a couple of recipes that are keepers for my family. Well, I was amazed – these were all good recipes, some of them simply great, food I’d serve to anyone anytime.
The South Beach cooks have done it again. You won’t waste your money on this gem. It’s just packed full of great food. My favorite section is the make-ahead section – there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing dinner is cooked ahead of time. The Spinach and Four-Cheese Lasagna is excellent and, as the book says, ‘freezes perfectly.’ These aren’t skimpy ‘diet’ dishes – Beef Burgundy, Grilled Tandoori Chicken, Greek Sloppy Joes, etc. Beautifully ilustrated, easy to follow instructions, and a walk through the South Beach program are included.
If you are thinking of trying the South Beach Diet, grab this book. It’s the only program I’ve ever been on which eliminates hunger and improves your health almost immediately. Check out the [...] site too, a great place to get support and journey with great friends.
5 Stars Another great South Beach book
The South Beach diet is the easiest way to lose weight and be healthy. And the “Quick” cookbooks make it even easier. I love finding new recipes and more variety to eating right.
Fat Flush for Life The Year Round Super Detox Plan to Boost Your Metabolism and Keep the Weight Off Permanently
Now she reveals the brand new secrets of Fat Flush for Life: a seasonal approach to burn stubborn body fat all year long! Fat Flush for Life integrates groundbreaking new Fat Flush diets with corresponding fitness and wellness programs. Dr. Gittleman not only explains how to detoxify the liver and lymphatic system to get rid of bloat, belly fat, and cellulite, but also how to optimize weight loss through GI-enhancing beneficial bacteria (probiotics), balancing thyroid function, and taking advantage of your body’s natural response to the seasons to keep you thin and healthy for life.
“The influence of the seasons on the delicate balance of your body is one of the most vital but overlooked aspects of total health,” says Dr. Gittleman. Based on cutting-edge science, you’ll find year-round healing strategies, including:
The Mediterranean Prescription Meal Plans and Recipes to Help You Stay Slim and Healthy for the Rest of Your Life
Renowned for its dazzling beauty and delectable cuisine, the Mediterranean island of Sicily has historically one of the healthiest diets in the world. Recent studies show that this eating style can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and depression, and that it can even increase fertility rates!
Ideally, being healthy isn’t just about being a certain weight: It’s about having all the systems of your body performing at optimum levels for as long a time as possible. Mackie Shilstone, in his role as medical advisor to professional athletes, presents a complex plan in The Fat-Burning Bible that incorporates supplements, sleep and stress management alongside the standards of diet and exercise.
The first section of the book helps you establish your honest starting point–it’s easy to be at an acceptable weight but have unacceptably high fat percentages, cholesterol or blood sugar. Establishing this point involves a fair amount of measuring and math, and includes checklists that will help you identity potential concerns like Syndrome X or thyroid problems.
Diet and nutrition follow; the section encompasses fairly complex suggestions on intake percentages as well as simple meal plans and recipes. Portion control figures highly–it’s back to the old ‘four ounces of skinless chicken breast’ as a basic building block. A short section on supplements refers in a general way to recent research, but is more of an introduction than complete system. More time is devoted to the exercise program, but this could be more complex than a typical dieter feels ready for. Clear photos show off specific exercises, but they require regular trips to the gym or a set of dumbbells at home. The last section, which Shilstone suggests photocopying, is a day-to-day journal that allows you to check off goals and note areas for further work. It’s a helpful tool, but also requires a fair amount of dedication.
Ultimately, this book seems designed for those who are already fairly fit, but are hoping to achieve a more ideal version of good health. It could be especially helpful for amateur athletes–if you’re prepping for a marathon or other big event, this might be just the tool you need. Jill Lightner

5 Stars Great Insight, however, do your own Research.
I am a licensed Chiropractor and studied Biochemistry as an undergraduate. Much of what was detailed in this book was a helpful review for me, as well as providing some new insightful information – particularly in reference to the “reverse fat pattern phenomenon” that was mentioned early on in the book. I disagree, however, with the author’s recommendation of a (40% Carbohydrate + 30% Protein) diet. I would decrease the Carbohydrate % and increase the Protein %. If someone were attempting to lose weight, I would not recommend severely restricting their carbohydrate intake – as Dr. Atkins would suggest, but to restrict it to approximately 30%. This is still less than Mackie Shilstone recommends, however. I would also recommend consuming 50% of your diet as Proteins vs. only the 30% that he suggests. I believe that an individual can do so without causing their body to enter “Ketosis” and still lose weight safely at the same time. Other than that, the book is right on. There is so much conflicting information out there that it is refreshing to find a book without all the “fatty” information and just the helpful facts.
2 Stars The Fat Burning Baloney
This book offers nothing new on the weight loss or fat burning front. Simply pages and pages of regergitating whats already “out there”. The book constist of 80% therories and 20% techniques. I was particularly frustrated with the section title 9 Foods That Burn Fat. I read and reread this section and it DOES NOT list ANY foods, let alone 9. The whole chapter consist of calorie counting and “suggested meal plans”, no specfics as title indicates. My whole point was to learn WHICH foods I need to make sure to incorporate into my own meal plan.
The only benefit I got from this book was the excercise plans which included great photos/instructions. Buying an excercise video would be more beneficial. Overall if you are a health novice and have no idea that body fat is bad, starving your self doesnt work, etc. then this is a good buy.
5 Stars Big Easy Fitness
This is such a doable program. The food suggestions are excellent-affordable-easy to prepare. The workout program is fun and offers variety for the bored exerciser. Mackie makes getting healthy easy-even in New Orleans!!
5 Stars Amazing — And I’ve Only Just Begun
I’m not sure why Susan Hogloch would write in the review included in the book description that this approach would appeal mostly to men. I urge you other women reading this out there to disregard that comment. The chapter on supplements which boost metabolism alone is worth the price of this book. I can say that because, to date, that’s the only part of the book I’ve had time to put into practice. Just with the addition of the supplements over the span of about 2 months, I lost 14 pounds. That weight came off in exactly the places he writes about (reverse fat gain syndrome) that often indicates a messed-up metabolism. I can only imagine what will happen once I adjust my exercise regime to his plan and start following the nutritional guidelines. I’m a believer and have been recommending the book to my friends.
5 Stars Exactly as titled
I bought this book after seeing a few bad reviews along with all the good ones. Some critics where fair, there is a lot of things in this book that have been said before, but honestly, when was there a big revolution in getting healthy? The only new things in this category are fad diets and we all know they don’t work. This book is very well written and it is not only written for the grossly overweight who have tried everything, but it is also written for people who are trying to help health issues such as high cholesterol and diabetes. Mr. Shilstone does a very good job explaining why things do and do not work rather than just saying it. All of the food recipes work well and he makes sure to make the point of not leaving large groups of foods off your diet, also everything he suggests is very satisfying food that tastes good too.
The supplements can be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t used to taking lots of pills every day. As for the “9 foods that burn fat” that another reviewer pointed out don’t exist, the actual title of that chapter is “foods that burn fat”, the chapter number is 9, so that is just a misunderstanding. This book is more about fixing your matabolism so that you can lose fat and not lean muscle mass, if that is not your goal, or you are not willing to invest an hour a day to exercise, you will not fully benefit from this book. With that said, do not be scared by the full hour, this is not a “gym rat” type of workout, it is not designed to become a bodybuilder, it is set up to get your muscles into shape to burn excess calories.

3 Stars The new ME diet is not for ME!!
Interesting and informative book, but I was a sugar burner and in that category you are the most limited on food!! Was to hard to do with other family members in the house who did not eat the same way.
5 Stars A book that answers lots of questions
Finally, a clear explanation of why some people struggle to lose weigh, even while doing all the ‘right things.’
Few trainers or dieticians talk about the hormonal comnponent. This also explains the hunger – satietry spectrum which many can benefit from.
5 Stars great science-based book
This book will be a great tool to anyone independent of their fitness or health levels. It integrates diet with exercise in thoughtful ways that are explained with natural science. Instead of red-listing foods for a diet that would be impossible to maintain, the ME Diet gives a “plate diagram” and an extensive list of “ok” foods based on each individual. I’m 2.5 weeks along and am pleased thus far!
4 Stars The New Me Diet
Just what I have been looking for. Other Diet books are way too detailed
and mention too many things that don’t even refer to most people.
5 Stars This book ROCKS!!!
I just discovered this book and have lost 6 lbs in 10 days! My husband has lost 7 lbs! We only wanted to lose 15 lbs total, so 9 more lbs. to go! Woo hoo!!! I can actually see my ab muscles again…
