UNPASTEURIZED HONEY

I’d love to say this idea was intentional, but it really wasn’t.

It was simply my desire to get rid of a container of honey.

I quite enjoy honey on my muffins and I found myself with very little left so I decided to scrape the top of the container of honey with a few almonds.

It never occurred to me that this simple and innocent action would result in one of my favourite current snacks!

I’ve always loved almonds and I’ve been eating unpasteurized honey for years now, but it’s only recently that I put the two together to create this super healthy and super satisfied snack.

Just in case you didn’t know, almonds are an incredible hunger-buster. Just a handful of almonds will kill any pang of hunger and will prevent you from reaching out for fat-inducing-snack-food-options.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: Pregnant women should NOT eat unpasteurized foods during their pregnancy!!!

<Almonds are a great snack food because>

* Almonds are rich in lean protein.

* They are a great way of lowering your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

* The natural oils in the almonds are good for your skin AND these healthy fats can help you lose weight.

* Almonds are rich in minerals like manganese, copper, riboflavin.

* Almonds are the perfect snack food because if buy them in bulk, you can easily put them in a plastic bag or a small contain and take them with you anywhere! I also find they make a great travel companion because I can take them with me and have something to snack on while I arrive at my final destination.

<Unpasteurized honey is great because>

*For the longest time, you could ONLY get unpasteurized honey from the natural health food store, but now I can buy my unpasteurized honey at my local grocery store, right next to the pasteurized varieties! Thinks are changing a lot in the world on nutrition and healthy foods are becoming more about more “common”.

* Other than being really tasty, unpasteurized honey is great at boosting your immune system. How many times has your grandmother suggested tea and honey when you aren’t feeling great? The benefits of honey are much more than a old wives’ tale … it’s real.

So what’s the big difference between pasteurized honey and unpasteurized honey?

>>>> Pasteurization requires the producers to kill the natural enzymes and probiotics in the honey. Unpasteurized honey is better for you because the natural enzymes and the probiotics remain intact.

I’d encourage all my readers to try this great snack food … I’m sure you’ll be just as hooked as I am!

    I try to follow the ’stone age caveman’ or paleolithic diet and this snack fits right in. I haven’t seen unpasteurized honey at the grocery store but now that I know about it, I’ll be sure to look for it. Thanks for sharing this simple and delicious treat.

    Liz,

    I had no idea my little snack idea fell as part of the caveman diet (paleo diet).

    I guess it makes sense because their is nothing processed in the mix of raw almonds and unpasteurized honey.

    Yes, I used to go to natural health food stores and buy my honey in bulk, but for the past few monhts (since Jan09) have noticed that my grocery store sells it. They are not even selling the unpasteurized honey in the “natural health” section, but they have it in the regular grocery section right next regular honey.

    It’s exciting news because it means regular grocey stores are aware that people are committed to making smarter food choices!

    Thanks for dropping by.
