mcdonalds_recession_diet
It’s no secret that many families are having a hard time feeding their families these days and as a result more and more people are turning to fast-food restaurants to feed their families.
Now, I surely don’t want to sound like I’m judging anyone because at the end of the day we all need to do what he need to do to survive, but my concern is that we’ll come out of this recession with higher levels of obesity than ever before.
Report show that McDonald’s has seen profits rise by 80 per cent last year while most industries have seen their profits dwindle into nothingness and many companies have had to shut their businesses. Most restaurants are suffering from the signs of a population that no longer has the disposable income it once had and now many restaurants are suffering while McDonald’s finds itself with fatter pockets than ever before.
Can you believe that the average number of McDonald’s customers served per day increased to more than 58 million in 2008? That’s 58 million people every single day eating at McDonald’s restaurants!!!!
I’m not a fast-food eater at all so this is all quite strange to me, but at the same time I do understand the choices some people have to make. I’m still quite concerned about how this recession will treat the health of countless low-income families and white-collar workers who find themselves faced with a level of unparalleled debt.
I always make an effort on Eat Smart Age Smart to find healthy recipes that are cost-effective to share with you so you have an alternative to fast-food restaurants.
I’d love to hear from you and find out what you think of McDonald’s rising 2008 profits?

totally agree, the health of the millions of folks and eating habits of the young stand to be affected.
Perhaps a focus on making mc donalds more healthy or choose the relatively healthy options there… but i haven;t been in one apart from a quick coffee for many years!

In these economic times I’m not surprised to see an increase in profits for McDonald’s. Eating healthy, for most people, can be time consuming and expensive.
I’ve also read recently that companies like Whole Foods are going to feel the pain if the economy continues to worsen.
We need websites like yours to teach Americans how to prepare inexpensive, healthy meals.

Liz,
Thanks you SO MUCH for the compliment. Indeed this site is dedicated to helping people make better food choices that aren’t all that expensive.
I truly hope that companies like Whole Foods don’t get affect too badly because that’s such an important addition.
The economy will turn around within the next few months and I hope that people go back to better eating habits.

Lance,
Just like you, I’ve not set foot in a Mc Donald restaurant in over a decade. I don’t drink their coffee so there is no point for me to visit their restaurants.
Indeed, McDonald can come up with healthier meals, but that would increase the cost of buying the ingredients and the cost of the finish product … AND … THAT would affect the bottom line.
Some people don’t have a choice because they live on a small budget, and I respect that, but I still am concerned.

Quite amazing, because in Europe, Mac Donalds is not that cheap. At least not if you go out eating with 2 or 3 people. You can actually make a good meal at home for the price you pay in their outlets, but I guess Mac Donalds is cheaper in the US and Canada?
Interesting article, this!
