The last few workouts before your birthday!
October 25, 2009

I know a lot of women get depressed when celebrating birthdays (I have some friends who will lock themselves in their rooms), but I generally feel pretty good about mine. I take stock of what my age is versus my physical condition and I’m usually quite pleased with the results.
When I celebrated another birthday a few months ago, I noticed for the first time that I trained just a little bit harder the week prior. It’s almost as if I were trying to show Mother Nature that I might be adding an extra candle to my birthday cake, but it wasn’t going to change my level of fitness one bit.
I think I make more of an effort and kick things up a bit the week before my birthday because I find it a great way to challenge myself.
Because I found this attitude to be quite intriguing, I decided to ask a few fellow gym-goers how they felt about their workouts the week before their birthday. Some of the answers were pretty hilarious, but I’ll let you read them for yourself:
> “The week before my birthday, I usually skip the gym because I consider I’ve done enough for the year.”
> “I must confess that I’m not a frequent gym-goer so the week before my birthday is no different.”
> “I usually hire a personal trainer 4 weeks before my birthday to work me to the bone so that I can look super-sexy when I add one more year.”
> “ I workout twice per day during the week that precede my birthday because I’m always nervous about getting a bit older.”
> “It’s all about feeling good and looking even better, so I for sure workout before my birthday and knowing that I’m about to be older makes me want to work harder!”
> “I have a new tradition where I use the week that precedes my birthday to explore a new exercise I’ve never tried before …with all this Dancing with the Stars craze, I’m taking salsa dancing for the first time this coming birthday!”
> “My birthday is in the winter and I usually head down south and spend a lot of time on the beach drinking and relaxing so a workout is not a priority for me the week before my birthday.”
I think it’s safe to say that most regulars at the gym or any physical activity do it for the love of it and the challenge that comes with years of perfecting your ability to do your favourite activity. But I do think some of the reasons why fitness buffs keep at it year-in, year-out, is because we want to do everything in our power to control how well we age. It’s a real motivation that fuels a lot of our workouts.
I’ll also add one last thing … vanity plays a big part in this fitness thing. It might not at first when you start working out, but once you start seeing results and feel more confident about how you look and how much stronger you are, you become more careful about how you treat your body and make a conscious effort to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Of course, along with the vanity comes the real concern: to stay as healthy as possible.
So, I’d like to know … have you noticed a change in how you workout in the days that precede your birthday?
