Video Review: Healthy chips and popcorn for a healthy snack
September 3, 2009

I know it might surprise a lot of my readers, but I simply love chips! I’d have to say that chips might be my ultimate weakness, followed closely by popcorn.
The journey to finding tasty, healthy chips and snacks has been a long one. You see, while I was working in the natural health food industry on the west coast about 10 years ago I gave up eating conventional chips after understanding that hydrogenated oil was not the type of oil you wanted to put into your body because they were considered by everyone in the natural health industry as “fats that kill”. Most chips were cooked in hydrogenated oil, until a few years ago when the “trans fat” scare became big news, and now more and more conventional chip companies advertise on their bags that their chips contain no trans fat.
I knew there were smaller, grass-roots chip companies that did a good job with their chips and I bought them regularly until they got bought out by bigger companies. After that, either their recipes changed or they started cooking their chips in hydrogenated oils.
I started searching for better chips at my local natural health food store. I brought home baked chips and other types of super-healthy chips that really didn’t do much for me because they were dry, hard and not very tasty — most times I felt like I was eating cardboard. Over time (and much dissatisfaction), I gave up eating chips and popcorn. If I did go to parties and snuck in a few unhealthy chips, I’d justify to myself that since I wasn’t eating them on a regular basis … it wasn’t too bad.
Several years ago (I’d say in 2001 or so), things started to change. There were more and more healthy chip companies on the market that were producing quite tasty chips that didn’t contain trans fat and that had a really short list of healthy ingredients. I started also noticing many food demonstrators (the people at the grocery stores whose job it is to make you taste new foods in the hopes that you’ll be seduced enough to keep buying their brand) giving out free samples and that’s how I was able to find a lot of really great healthy chips and snack brands.

I’ve already reviewed one of the brands that I quite like and if you missed that review, you can catch it here: Review: Popcorn Indiana is my favourite popcorn!
I have since found two other great brands: Lesser Evil (they make healthy popcorn and other healthy snacks) and Food Should Taste That Good (they make a plethora of healthy corn chips and corn snacks).
I want to say one quick thing about Lesser Evil. I really like their company philosophy and some of the catchphrases they use to share with consumers — the reasons why you should ban unhealthy snacks and start buying healthy snacks instead. Check out some of the phrases:
1) “Stop bad snacking”
2) “Snackcident prevention team”
3) “Two smiles to every snack” (in reference to your good side and your evil side)
Words do say a lot, but I thought that a quick video review would say even more and that’s why I decided to share with you my 3-D take on these two healthy snacks!

Yeah! Lesser Evil’s approach is different. Their aim is to make people consider “good snacks” rather than “bad snacks”. And I love their products … I always buy them!
